As loving dog owners, we know that ensuring our dog’s well-being is of utmost importance.
Therefore, in this article, I’ll explore the essential tips and tricks to provide your Rottweiler with the joy and contentment they deserve.
So, let’s dive in and discover the keys to a happy Rottweiler!
How Do I Keep My Rottweiler Happy
From my experience, there are several ways of keeping your Rottweiler happy, but the two most important ways are physical exercise, mental stimulation activities, and making sure they are properly socialized.
And this is because Rottweilers are high-energy and working dogs that can easily get bored if you leave them with nothing to do.
Rottweilers are full of energy and are always ready to explore, however, as they enter their senior years, you should reduce the intensity of exercise to protect their joints.
That being said, here are my effective ways of keeping your Rottweiler happy, which are as follows:
Create a dog-friendly environment
This is one of the most important things to keep in mind when trying to keep your Rottweiler happy.
I can tell you that if you don’t provide a comfortable and safe environment for your Rottweiler, you will end up having a frustrated dog.
From my experience, the last thing you want to have around you is a frustrated Rottweiler, as they can be destructive or engage in behavior issues.
Your Rottweiler will be happy when you create a comfortable environment for them, there are many things to do to create such an environment which include:
- Providing a noise-free space
- Providing a comfortable bed
- Keeping their environmental temperature at the required level
- Providing chew toys
- Providing different types of interactive and engaging toys
- Keeping their space clean
- Making sure they get proper air circulation
These things and more will provide a dog-friendly environment for your Rottweiler.
Spend quality time together
Nothing makes Rottweilers happier than spending quality time together with their family and playing some fun games.
Of course, you will not always be at home with them, but when you do, be sure to make it count.
There are a lot of games or activities you can do with your Rottweiler while spending time with them, these include:
- Playing tug of war
- Playing hide and seek
- Watching movies with them
- Playing which hand game
- Playing the shell game
- Teaching them more tricks
- Playing fetch games with them
- Belly rubbing sessions
- Grooming them
- Cuddling with them
- Cooking with them together
These activities will surely keep your Rottweiler happy, and a happy Rottweiler is a well-behaved and healthy pup.
Shower your Rottweiler with love and affection
My Rottweiler (Best) loves nothing more than me showering her with love and affection, she doesn’t just get tired of getting belly rubs.
This goes for most Rottweilers, they just love their owners to shower them with love and affection, and by so doing you keep your Rottweiler happy.
Showering your Rottweiler with love and affection also makes them feel like valued members of your family, and they will reward you with unwavering devotion.
These can be done by:
- Belly rubbing sessions
- Giving them their favorite treats
- Getting them new toys
- Cuddling with them
- Verbal praise
Providing regular exercise for your Rottweiler
Rottweilers are working and energetic dogs that require daily exercise to stay healthy and happy.
Without any form of physical activity, you end up having a frustrated Rottweiler that chews things up, digs up your yard, and barks unnecessarily due to excessive energy.
If you are too busy, aim to give them 45 minutes to 1 hour of exercise daily, you can do this in many ways, which are as follows:
- Walking them
- Playing fetch with them
- Taking obstacle courses with them at home
- Letting them run from one pole to another with rewards
- Letting them climb up and down the stairs with rewards
- Playing football with them
- Letting them run around your building
- Doing yoga with them
- Dancing with them
There are just way too many things you can do with your Rottweiler for exercise, to read more here’s my article on exercising your Rottweiler.
I suggest you aim for at least 30–60 minutes of physical activity each day, which can include walks, runs, or play sessions in a fenced yard.
Providing mental stimulation
In addition to providing physical exercise, you should also provide mental stimulation to keep your Rottweiler’s mind engaged.
Rottweilers are intelligent dogs and need mental stimulation to prevent boredom and stay healthy and happy.
Engage your Rottweiler in activities such as puzzle toys, obedience training, and interactive games to keep their minds active.
Here’s how to do it:
- Teaching your Rottweiler new tricks
- Playing which hand game with your Rottweiler
- Teaching your Rottweiler new commands
- Playing a game of hide-and-seek with your Rottweiler
- Playing the shell game with your Rottweiler
- Playing a game of hiding treats and having your Rottweiler search for them
Teaching your Rottweiler new commands and tricks
This is also another effective way of keeping your Rottweiler happy at home, this not only keeps them happy but helps in shaping their behavior.
Keep in mind that teaching your Rottweiler new commands and tricks is also a form of mental stimulation, activities that they need to stay happy.
Here are some commands to teach your Rottweiler:
- Come
- Sit
- Stay
- Down
- Leave it
- Go
- Heel
- Shake
- Stand
- Wait
- Drop it
- Quiet
- Touch
Provide a balanced diet and fresh water
As a Rottweiler owner, I can tell you that Rottweilers love to eat, and they never get tired of eating, so if you keep free feeding them without a schedule you will end up with a 200-pound dog.
Therefore, I suggest you pay attention to what you feed your Rottweiler, you can combine both dry kibble and raw food to get the best result.
To keep your Rottweiler healthy and happy, I strongly recommend providing a balanced diet and fresh water daily for your Rottweiler.
Make sure you change your Rottweiler’s drinking water daily and wash the bowl whenever you change it. Contact your vet for the appropriate diet for your Rottweiler.
Create and stick to a daily routine
Rottweilers love following a routine, this also helps them stay disciplined and well-behaved.
I can tell you that your Rottweiler will be happy if they know what to expect ahead of time.
You will notice them grab the leash when it’s time for a walk or let you know when it’s bedtime, this makes them happy.
Here’s a quick daily routine for your Rottweiler:
- They wake up in the morning and go for their morning walk or exercise
- Come back from morning walk and eat
- After eating, they go potty
- They rest and sleep
- Then grooming when needed
- After grooming they play
- Go for evening walks
- Get ready to eat
- Cuddle with you
- Then go to bed
You can tweak this routine to suit your lifestyle and that of your Rottweiler.
Get rewards or praise
Getting rewards for doing a task makes most Rottweilers happy and eager to do more.
However, you should be careful with rewards as Rottweilers can easily get obsessed with rewards, so be careful not to reward negative behaviors.
You can use the following to reward them when they behave the way you want;
- Verbal praise
- Commercial dog treats
- Chin or belly rubs
- Homemade treats
- Favorite toys
- Cuddle time
- Playtime
Reward-based grooming sessions
Not all Rottweilers enjoy grooming sessions, but I can tell you that when rewards are involved, they are fired up.
A simple grooming session in which you will reward your Rottweiler can make them happy.
Grooming might involve:
- Brushing their teeth
- Cleaning their ears
- Clipping their nails
- Brushing their coat
- Bathing them
- Cleaning their paws
Massage and belly rubbing sessions
Rottweilers enjoy massage and belly rubbing sessions with their owners, this will help keep them happy.
Massage and belly rubbing sessions can be done when you are free, this will definitely help your Rottweiler to relax and be happy.
Giving them the freedom to run around your yard
What can be more peaceful and enjoyable to a Rottweiler than giving them the freedom to chase squirrels in your yard.
Rottweilers are high-energy dogs that require regular exercise, and giving them the freedom to run and chase things brings absolute happiness to them.
However, you should be careful not to let them out of your yard or your sight, this is because they can get involved in situations that may harm them, other dogs, or humans.
Therefore, to give them freedom, I advise you to have your yard fenced before letting roaming freely.
